Dear Ogden Families;

Thank you for your continued support of our community school. With May around the corner, we continue planning great things for our students. It is also time to plan for the year ahead.

It is with this in mind that I inform you that I have accepted a position overseas at the Canadian International School in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam for the next school year. While sad to leave Ogden, I am excited about this international experience. I am in constant awe of Ogden families with connections all around the world. I will now be able to use what I have learned from you to make the most of this adventure for my family.

Dealing with the issue of Homelessness in our Communty

For the month of March, Room 10 will be doing a project on Homelessness. We will be learning about why people are homeless and what we can do help them. Many homeless people do not have money, friends, or go to school. Room 10 will be collecting money to help buy new socks for the homeless people. Please donate your loose change into the blue piggy bank in the office.

Ogden Nutrition Program
Ogden has a fantastic morning nutrition program because of our amazing parents who step forward to coordinate and volunteer. The Nutrition Coordinator role is a very important one at Ogden and we thank Hala Taboul for doing a splendid job in developing the program during her time as Coordinator.  Hala has passed on the Coordinator role to Kavita Aggarwal who is publishing her first snack calendar on the back of this update. We continue to need parent volunteers to help in the preparation of snacks. Please drop in to meet Kavita and lend a hand at 2pm in our kitchen. Your continued support is essential for the sustainability of this program that supports all of our children.

Ogden APP and Home-School Communication
Thank you to the Ogden Families that are using the Ogden APP to access school information.  This application now delivers key messages and event information to our community. Our classroom teachers are increasing their use of the OGDEN APP in the coming months. As a parent you are now able to get as much or as little news about Ogden as you want…without missing the essential information notifications!

Piano Lessons at Ogden
Caleb Seguin, a local musician and piano teacher, is offering piano lessons to interested Ogden students during non-instructional time. If you are interested please contact him directly at Caleb Seguin, calebseguin@gmail.com. Private and Group lessons are available.

Clubs at Ogden
Lego and Scrabble clubs are now underway. Please talk to your children about the lunchtime activities at Ogden. We encourage them to stay tuned to our morning announcements about ongoing clubs and sports. Stay tuned for more updates on the Ogden APP in the coming days.

Ogden APP and Home-School Communication

Thank you to the Ogden Families that have downloaded our Ogden APP. The next step is to subscribe to your child's classroom on the APP. Our teachers will be increasing their use of the APP for classroom communications in the New Year!
  
This application now delivers key messages and event information to our community. Staff will be available at school right after the Winter Concert and during the Community Potluck dinner to help parents subscribe to their child's classroom using the APP.

Update about Report Cards for 2015/16

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) has ratified an agreement with the Government of Ontario and the Ontario Public Schools Boards’ Association (OPSBA). This letter will provide an update on elementary progress reports.

Junior and Senior Kindergarten:
As part of the agreement, teachers will not be completing Progress Reports for students in Senior Kindergarten (SK)  in December 2015.  

Parents/guardians of children in Senior Kindergarten will be contacted by their Senior Kindergarten Teacher to schedule an observation visit or parent-teacher conference in February 2016. It is anticipated that parents/guardians of children in Junior Kindergarten (JK) will receive a Summary Report in February 2016, and that both JK and SK students will receive a Summary Report in June 2016.

Grades 1 to 8:

As previously announced, teachers will complete Progress Reports for students in Grades 1 to 8, which will be sent home on December 10, 2015. Progress Reports are designed to provide a broad sense of your child’s progress in mastering the curriculum, as well as insight into the development of important learning skills and work habits.  The Progress Reports will be completed in line with the Ministry of Education’s Growing Success document.  Teachers will use their professional judgment in completion of these reports.

Reporting Dates for JK to Grade 8 Students (Dec 2015 to June 2016)

·         Grades 1 to 8 Progress Reports will be sent home on Thursday, December 10^th, 2015.

·         Term 1 Report Cards will be issued the week of February 8, 2016 with Parent/Teacher Conferences scheduled for February 12^th, 2016. 

·         Term 2 Report Cards will be issued the week of June 27^th, 2016.

We value the ongoing, meaningful communication between the home and school to support student learning.  Students learn best when parents and educators work together.  If you would like to discuss your child’s progress, we invite you to contact your child’s teacher directly.

We want to send a clear message of thanks to LiveGreen Toronto for supporting our Schoolyard Revitalization. We also want to emphasize the importance of our schoolyard as a beautiful ‘green’ space for our students as well as the local community! Ogden is a gem (that could use some polishing) in this fantastic city!

Gardening Help Needed!
Please talk to or email andreas.ghabrial@tdsb.on.ca if you are able to help!  Parents interested in helping us prepare our schoolyard for the winter are welcome to join us anytime next week with gardening gloves in hand.  We will do our best to clean out weeds and lay down mulch in preparation for our 1000 Daffodil Bulb Planting on October 22nd.    As a community we will plant 1000 bulbs between 2 and 5pm that will reward us with early spring colours!

Ogden “LiveGreen Toronto” Playground Revitalization Day, October 22, 2015

I welcome all families to join us in thanking LiveGreen Toronto for their generous grant of $25,000 that has gone into recent schoolyard improvements. We will have a thank you ceremony in our school yard at 3:45 pm. I will also update the community on the status of our planned playground climbing structure. Our local Councilor, Joe Cressy, will be in attendance. Parents interested in helping us prepare our schoolyard for the winter are welcome to join us with gardening gloves in hand between 2 and 4 pm. We will do our best to clean out weeds, laydown mulch, and plant 1000 bulbs that will reward us with early spring colours.

Small Group Piano Lessons at Ogden

Caleb Seguin, a local musician and piano teacher, would like to offer piano lessons to interested Ogden students.  To support the program a recommended donation of $10/lesson will get us started. As your children get to know Caleb Seguin better, we can explore longer individualized sessions starting in January 2016.  If you are interested in having your child participate please send an email to andreas.ghabrial@tdsb.on.ca including your child’s name and current level of piano knowledge. I will meet with Caleb early next week to create a schedule that will accommodate as many interested students as possible.

Ogden School Playground

Phase 1, $115, 000 – Planned Starting Date – August 1, 2015

At this point an encroachment agreement is in the works. Legal from both the TDSB and City of Toronto are working out the arrangements. Transportation and Parks and Recreation have a stake in the outcome. School will notify community as soon as there is an update. Councilor Cressy and Trustee Malik are involved and supportive.

Phase 2, $100,000 – Work with School Council to determine priorities on Master Plan that can be covered with this second allocation of Section 37 monies. Planning to begin when Phase 1 is complete. Construction to begin in Summer of 2016.

LiveGreen Grant – 25,000 – Final report is due to City of Toronto in October. There is budget room for seating (benches or rocks) and gardens. Live Green monies will also be used based on the Ogden School Revitalization MasterPlan.

Work to Rule

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) announced that Phase 3 of its work-to-rule campaign will begin on Monday, September 21, 2015. The new actions include not:

§  Filling in for absent teachers

§  Participating in interviews with parents, unless there is a concern about a student's progress

§  Updating or distributing classroom blogs, websites or newsletters

§  Updating Individual Education Plans by the deadline

§  Preparing report card comments

§  Running extra-curricular activities on Wednesdays

ETFO has indicated that if sufficient progress is not made, it MAY implement rotating one day strikes in October. Read more on ETFO's website.

The union representing school support staff began job-related action in the form of a work-to-rule on September 10, 2015. CUPE, Local 4400 members will continue to report to work and perform their regular duties but will not perform any additional duties. For example, staff have been instructed to work only their regular hours, to take all breaks and lunch, and not to attend unpaid meetings.

RE: Meet the Teacher on September 28th from 12:45 to 1:45 has been postponed.

I continue to be optimistic about a resolution to the current WTR Campaign by the Elementary Teachers of Ontario(ETFO). Until that time however, any Meet the Teacher events will be postponed.
You are welcome always to arrange a meeting with your child's teacher to enhance the home school relationship. I encourage you to arrange this with the teacher during pick up or drop off if convenient or by leaving your child's teacher a message with Myla in our office at 416 393-9110.

Dental Screening at Ogden - September 23 to 25

Dear Ogden Families;                                                                                School Year 2015-2016

Toronto Public Health (T.P.H.) provides dental programs to children from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8.

To identify children with oral health problems, a screening program is offered to students in accordance with the Ontario Ministry of Health requirements for mandatory health programs. The screening is an assessment by a dental hygienist using sterilized instruments. The dental hygienist will assess the need for topical fluoride, scaling, sealant and any other obvious dental needs.

As a follow up to the screening, only parents whose children are identified as requiring dental services will be notified. A note to that effect will be sent home with your child/ren for your information and action. You may also receive a phone call from T.P.H. dental staff to assist you in accessing care.

Please be advised that this screening assessment does not replace the dental examination done by a licensed dentist.

The dental screening dates for Ogden Junior Public School will be on September 23, 24 and 25, 2015.

If you do not wish your child/ren to be screened, please inform the school.

September 18, 2015 Update about School Council, Parent Snack and Chats, Cross Country and Lego Robotics

Reorganization of Classrooms – September 18, 2015 is count day

We have had a healthy registration for our school this year and may need to balance classes. Our count for September 18 has been done and we will find out early next week about next steps. I will communicate any developments to our School Council at the meeting on September 24^th .

Did you know that your child can get help from their school library when outside of school?

TDSB has a Virtual Library website of digital resources (e-books, news articles, streamed video, curated sites), to help students, teachers and parents.  Digital resources can be accessed anywhere, anytime with an internet connection. Some resources need passwords which you can get from your school's teacher-librarian.

The Virtual Library is an extension of your school library. It can be used for inquiry, projects, homework, building a love of reading or just for fun.

September Update

Safe Arrival and Dismissal

Staff supervision of the playground begins at 8:30 am and ends at 3:45 pm. All students without parents/guardians in the playground before and after this time will be brought into the office to resolve the problem.   To ensure safe movement of students, please keep clear of our hallways and doors during entry and dismissal.

Our School Bus

Students arriving and leaving by bus need to have a consistent schedule. Students scheduled for the bus at the end of the day will only be removed if a parent and/or guardian is onsite to pick them up. Please ensure you are at school to pick up your child before 3:30 pm.

Thank you to those parents that attended our information sessions last week. If you are interested in participating on Council as a Parent Representative please contact the school office by 4pm on September 16^th for your nomination form.  Please join us for a meet and greet on Friday September 18^th at 3:45 pm  in our Schoolyard. This will be an opportunity to meet other parents and council nominees.  Our School Council Election will take place on Thursday September 24. Please join us to meet your new School Council in the Gym at 5:30 pm. This will also be the first official meeting of council.

Cross Country Team

Meet the Teacher

Communication with your child’s teacher about their program and progress is an important part of schooling. Due to the current impasse in negotiations for teacher contracts, after school ‘Meet the Teacher’ is not possible.  Pending further developments we are scheduling Monday September 28^th from 12:45pm to 1:45pm as a time during the school day for you to meet with the teacher in your child’s classroom.  It will be an opportunity to find out about how the curriculum will be delivered and how you can support the learning from home.

Wishing the Ogden Community a Wonderful Summer!

Dear Ogden Families;

We have had a good year at Ogden and wish those families leaving for other schools in September all the best. For those returning, we have already begun to plan for an exciting 2015/6 academic year.  A Summary of Marks will be sent to your home address in mid-July providing you with grades for students in Grade 1 to 6 and promotion information for our FDK students.  We also have the following teacher changes to announce.

Mr. Quach will be missed by the Ogden community for his classroom practice of experiential learning and supporting families with extra-curricular activities. His donation of skates to the Ogden community is just one example of his giving nature. We wish Mr. Quach all the best at his new school.

Mr. White is leaving us for a central position where he will ensure that our schools are healthy and safe places for students to learn and staff to work. His expertise in reading instruction and ESL will be missed. We wish him well in his new position.  Joining us on the Grade 1 team will be Ms. Liang. She is also a reading specialist and we welcome her warmly to the Ogden teaching team.

Ms. Berry has made our Outdoor Classroom a place of wonder. Her enthusiasm for continually encouraging the curious nature of our youngest learners will absolutely be missed.  Joining us in September to take on the Outdoor Classroom will be Mr. Roberts. He has a great deal of experience growing food in gardens and is looking forward to sharing his experiences and expertise with us.

Ms. Cheung stepped into our ESL program and made sure that students continued to be well supported. She will not be far away next year and we wish her well in her regular teaching assignment at Lord Lansdowne.

Sanaa Soussan will be leaving us for a school closer to home. We congratulate her on the birth of her son, Brock Ayman and wish her well in her new school and role as a new mother. We will miss her ability to make everyone feel welcome at Ogden. Joining us will be Nigel Dance as VP for both Alpha and Ogden.

FDK 5/6 Rm 6,14	Ideal Community Structures with Kruger/STEM	9:15 to 10 am	Room 6 and 14 have been working together to learn about structures. We now are creating structures that we feel are important to our community and will be placing them on a large map.
FDK Rm 7	Bee movie screening/STEM	2:00 to 2:30	Students have created a stop motion movie about how bees make honey; They built the set, created all the props, wrote the storyboard, and filmed and edited the movie themselves.
GR.1 Rm 8	Animal Projects/Inquiry in Science	1:15 to 1:45	Grade 1s will be using knowledge from science class drawing on Characteristics of living things to help organize their research information to create their own self-published non-fiction texts after completing a reflective and peer editing process that allows students to use social and communication skills.
Gr. 1/2 Rm 2	Animal Projects	1:15 to 1:45	Students will be working on the same subject matter of researching animals that students have chosen to report on reflecting knowledge they have learned from science classes about the characteristics of living things.  Ms. Brown's class will be using I-pad technology to produce a digital version of their written reports.
Gr. 2 Rm 11	Hybrid Habitats/ Inquiry and Art  in Science	2:00 to 3:00	Students will present habitats designed to meet the needs of hybrid creatures. These creatures incorporate the characteristics that will allow them to adapt to different biomes.
Gr.3 16	Programming and Coding	12:15 to 1:45 PM	Programming and Coding: Students will learn coding language to create his or her own video games online.
Gr. 3-5 Rm 12, 15	Design Challenge with Nelson/ STEM	12:45 to 1:45	Students will take unwanted materials (recyclables/garbage) and reuse/repurpose them by designing and making something new from them.
G3-6 Rm 10	Endangered Species: Inquiry and Art in Science	9:15 to 10 am	Room 10 has been researching “how we can be a part of the solution” in reducing our carbon footprint. We are completing our Endangered Species projects and creating interesting paintings of our animals.
Gr. 1-3 Gym	Physical Education and Health	1:00 to 3:00 pm	Healthy bodies with Daily Physical Activity and Eating Right.
FDK Yard	Gardening / Outdoor Classroom Inquiry	9:15 am to 11:00 am	Rooms 4, 6 and 7 will be observing changes in our early gardening activities, investigating interesting items at our discovery table, and enjoying free exploration in our outdoor classroom.
ESL Rm 19	Vocabulary-Building Jeopardy	9:30 to 11:00 am	Students will write their vocabulary words on cards with assigned points. Then they will use words in sentences that *make sense* to win points.
